Welcome to the Home to Roost Community Page! If you have an item you’d like to post, please post a comment below. All posts are in the Chicagoland area, unless otherwise noted.

**PLEASE READ** If you are considering adding a bird to an existing flock, check out my Avian Introductions post. I’ve treated several cases of chicken violence because of introducing new birds to a flock. It is harder to introduce one bird than to introduce two or more. Adjustment is tricky and may take a while! Use the tips on this post to help the birds make the adjustment.

4/9 Chicken found in the city This fella was found at 1 S. Dearborn, near Michigan Ave. Barred rock. Unsure of gender. Also not sure if it’s a large size or a bantam. Appears to be about 3 months old. Interested, call Annette: 630-841-7110.

REHOMED 2/16 Sweetie This bird was found in Hyde Park. She is small (game bantam), but has a big personality. She snuggles in my lap while I work! She is healthy, other than feathers missing from her back and head (signs of too many roosters to too few hens). Oh, and she has the hottest blue legs you’ve ever seen! Call Jen 708-524-5038.

REHOMED 2/1 A home for Henrietta Henrietta the bantam naked neck frizzle hen needs a home! Ugly but very sweet! She has scaly mites on her legs (you can treat by dipping in oil) and may have a slight cough. Call Jen 708-524-5038.

REHOMED 1/25 ROOSTERS NEED HOMES. Chicago Bird Collision Monitors needs to find homes for several roosters. Two are at a shelter and may be up for euthanasia soon. The other is in Bartlett. One is a very nice black and white (barred rock). One has an eye injury. If you are able to take one or more of these birds, it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Annette Prince: 630-841-7110. CBCM can provide transport for the birds; they just need a place to live.

REHOMED 2/7 Box of orphaned chicks The call of the day was FedEx at OHare – with a box of chicks that had been there since Saturday. They were on their way to Arizona and got stuck. I got them this AM. There are eight total still alive and healthy, eating and drinking. They are from McMurray, hatched 2/4, and the label says barred cochin bantams (5), light Brahma bantams (1), Araucana bantams (2), Rhode Island red bantams (5). I’d bet these are the Araucanas, Rhode Island, and Brahma. The hatchery is sending a replacement shipment to AZ, so these guys are now Illini!

They have been vaccinated for Marek’s and coccidiosis.

NOTE: They are all BANTAMS (smaller than standard size) and STRAIGHT RUN (50% will be boys – think ahead to what you’re going to do with the males).

Given what these guys have been through, I’d like them to go to a home that already has raised chicks, and I’m asking for a small rehoming fee. Can split them up. Call Jen: 708-524-5038.

REHOMED 10/28 Red Hen Seeks Home. The Village of Skokie periodically picks up lost or abandoned chickens, and currently we have one, an ISA Brown  (Rhode Island Red/white Leghorn hybrid) who has been debeaked and somewhat battered. EXPIRED Contact Dorie Ross (info below) 10/21 Beautiful, happy hens need homes. (From Sandra K.) I have been a volunteer at the Prairie Crossing Hen House in Grayslake for the past year.  I was recently informed that the hens will be put down in November.  I understand that there is a cycle of life for “production” hens.  However, I believe a good number of these hens are still laying and could do so for at least a couple more years, even though production might be slow.

This past year, I collected eggs from about 225 hens at Prairie Crossing every Monday afternoon.  No matter how bad my day had been, no matter how low I felt, as soon as the hens saw me, they would come running and clucking to greet me and all I could do was laugh and completely forget all my worries. These are beautiful, happy hens that have been on pasture all summer.  I would l like to find homes for as many of these wonderful birds as I can before they are scheduled to become soup chickens in November.

REHOMED 10/8 Looking for a home for Suko. She is very docile and remains the flunkie of the flock.  She does not really lay many eggs, though she goes in spurts, for a few weeks and then stops.  She is a buff bantum wyandotte registered breed and very pleasant.  We will keep her for two more weeks then send her to a local-owned farm if she is not adopted. cell: 847 226  9510. Ask for  Carolyn or David Ioder.

REHOMED 10/11 Looking for a home for an Ameracauna rooster. Initially feisty, but can be handled. Appears healthy other than bird lice. Found in Humboldt Park. Contact Julie: 773-620-6086

Red hen looking for home

TAKEN TO ANIMAL WELFARE LEAGUE 5/29:  Lost chicken at 1532 W. Ohio (Ohio and Ashland). It’s fairly young, maybe 3 months, white.  The people who found it think it’s a rooster.

REHOMED 5/16:  Hen found at Fullerton and Central 10 AM Sunday. If you think she’s yours, describe her to claim her. If you think you’d make a good home, tell me why.

REHOMED 5/8: Very sweet rooster found in Logan Square. Email Home to Roost with pix or description.

The first photograph is of Pearl. She is definitely the sweetest of the three. The second picture is of Norma and Martha. Also very friendly, but get along with each other and tend to pick on Pearl. We're not certain, but we are guessing the chickens are all about 6 months old. They each lay an egg a day too!

We are in search of a home to purchase for our family. One of the goals when we move is to raise our own flock of chickens (and maybe some other animals later on down the road). We are having a hard time finding a suburb/town that it is legal to keep chickens. Anyone out there got an suggestions for us? We don’t want to come back to the city for now, & want to be in within a 40 minute drive of Carol Stream. Thanks for any ideas you have!
